Alumni Rock!

Many thanks to all our Computer Science Department alumni who made it out to talk to our students about the interview and resume process on April 12th. This was our 5th annual event. Our alumni provided great tips on what should be included on a resume, questions that might be asked, and things a interviewee should bring up during an interview. These tips are important to keep in mind whether you interviewing for a permanent position or an internship.


As part of our celebration we inducted our latest members to the Epsilon Delta Pi Honor Society. The new inductees were Mitch Cannon, Jarrod Cupps, Rachel DeAngelo, Daniel Zarycki,

We acknowledge contributions made by our students and alumni to the department and to the university.  For their help with the Dirksen Junior High workshop we recognized Jarrod Cupps, Joe Robinson, and Kevin Healy.  For their work on the Mobile App Programming Event we recognized Nick Bond, Jarrod Cupps, Ross McCallister, and USF Computer Science alumnus, Scott Walton.  And finally for their work on the support for the USF Greening of the Campus website, we recognized Jason Kryst and Jarrod Cupps.

We announced our Meritorious Service Award winner, Jarrod Cupps and our Joan Nahas Ramuta Award winner, Ross McCallister.

Afterwards alumni and students gathered casually to chat, acquaintances were renewed and new ones made. A suggestion for next year is that students bring their resumes along so that the alumni can give advice on the content.

We're hosting our 

Fifth Annual Computer Science Department Alumni-Student Event

Yes, this we'll be our fifth year!  It's always a lot of fun. A great chance to connect and reconnect with others who went to USF (or College of St. Francis).  Once again we're asking our alumni to talk about the interview and resume process for those who are looking for programming or IT jobs.   Their experiences are invaluable.  

It's always a fun evening.

Some topics we'll cover in our meeting are:

• What works on a technical resume.
• What should a candidate emphasize on a resume
• What should be in a cover letter.
• Questions that interviewers ask.
• Questions candidates should ask.
• Information that a candidate should have about the company before an interview.
• Anything else students want to ask or alumni want to offer is also welcome.

This is an informal discussion, a sharing of insights and tips, so we'll provide some snacks and beverages.

It will be a fun, interactive experience and a chance to see old friends and make new ones.  

We'll have a robot on display from our first ever Robotics class being taught by Tim Archer, USF Computer Science, 1998 

                                   
and hear about the success of our first 

Programming for the Droid class, taught last fall by T.J. Eakle, USF Mathematics/Computer Science, 2009.  

We'll talk about upcoming new classes - 

C#  & .Net Programming which will be taught by Scott Walton, USF Computer Science, 1993, 

as well as our nine week seminar series on 

Cloud Computing and Virtualization 

that we're offering in conjunction with ACCA - Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area.  

We'll announce the Joan Nahas Ramuta Award winner and our department winner for Meritorious Service.  We'll induct our newest members of Epsilon Delta Pi (EDP) Honor Society.

Game Making - an inside look

 

USF Computer Science and Information Technology students are invited to attend a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Indie Game: The Movie at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on Tuesday, April 17th.

The 96 min film follows the dramatic journeys of game developers as they create and release their games to the world. The screening includes an in-person Q&A with the filmmakers and Adobe® prizes.

Transportation and tickets will be provided by Student Life. We will be leaving campus at 5:00 PM and returning at approximately 10:30 PM.

Our mobile event was a great success.  It was well attended and the presenters did a great job introducing the audience to the ins and outs of developing on different mobile platforms.

Ross McCallister - Computer Science and IT, Jarrod Cupps-IT, and Nick Bond -Computer Science and IT provided a great deal of knowledge and insight into the mobile app development process. Comments from the attendees were overwhelmingly positive.

The event was not only informative but it highlighted what a talented and knowledgeable group of students we have in the USF Computer Science Department.  The students organized, ran and presented at the meeting.   They were ably aided in their presentations by alumnus Scott Walton, Computer Science 1993

Creating Mobile Apps Event

We're going to have a discussion evening about developing in Android and other platforms such as IOS (iPhone) and Windows Mobile.
So mark the date:

Ross McCallister (Computer Science & IT Senior) will be showing how to begin developing apps for Android Smartphones. Nick Bond (Computer Science & IT Freshman) will cover the Apple iPhoneTM platform and Scott Walton (Computer Science 1993) will cover the MS WindowsTM platform. Jarrod Cupps (Web Application Development Senior) and TJ Eakle  (Mathematics/Computer Science 2009) will be discussing web tool integration in the new mobile market.   Learn how you can get started in this cutting edge field.

Our first Android course was a success with TJ Eakle at the helm.   As we reviewed the course we determined that a Java course would be a good pre-req for the Android class, so we'll be offering Java in the Fall, and Programming for the Android in the Spring for the coming Academic year.

These are great questions.  The answers to some of  these questions have been classified until recently.  Now Top Secret Rosies reveals the story in a one hour documentary.   AfterMath & the Computer Science Department are working together to sponsor two showings of this entertaining program.

Congratulations to 2011 Computer Science graduates

It's Winter graduation time!

We want to offer our congratulations to our latest graduates in Computer Science:  Joel Perez, Alexander Schmid, (Magna cum laude) and Nicholas Zelinski (Cum laude).   We're very proud of you.

Pictured are Alex and Nick.  Unfortunately, Joel was unable to attend the ceremony.  Alex starts his new job with CA Technologies on Jan 17th.  Nick is starting his new job on Jan 23rd.
